About the Producer
Cantina Diomede is part of the Fantini Group and is based in northern Puglia, close to the town of Canosa. It covers 200 hectares of vineyards. Winemaker Dennis Verdecchia works closely with Diomede’s oenologist team to obtain high quality, healthy grapes. Most operations are carried out manually, and the management of the vineyard follows an organic approach.
Vineyard and Winery
The name “Canace” comes from blending the initial syllables of the towns where the wineries are located – Canosa, 480 metres above sea level in the DOC Castel del Monte area in the hills north of Bari, and Acerenza, on the foothills of Vulture in Basilicata. Soils are calcareous and rocky, and vines are vertical shoot positioned, and Guyot trained, with a density of 3,500 per hectare.
The grapes were left to partially dry on the vines. Upon arrival at the winery, they underwent a maceration on the skins lasting 15 to 20 days followed by fermentation at controlled temperatures using selected yeasts. Post fermentation, the wine was first aged in concrete tanks for eight months and then in French oak barriques for a further twelve months before bottling and release.

About the Grape
Nero di Troia, also known as Uva di Troia, is an ancient red wine grape variety primarily grown in the Apulia region of Southern Italy. Believed to have originated in the town of Troia, hence its name, this grape has a rich history and is an integral part of the local winemaking tradition.
The Nero di Troia grape is known for its thick skin and high tannin levels, making it particularly well-suited for producing robust, full-bodied red wines. The grapes are small to medium in size, with a deep purple color that is reminiscent of its intense flavors. This grape variety thrives in the warm Mediterranean climate of Apulia, where its unique characteristics are fully expressed.
The versatility of the Nero di Troia grape is reflected in the wide range of wine styles it can produce. From easy-drinking, fruit-forward wines to more complex and age-worthy ones, there is something to suit every palate. It is often blended with other local varieties, such as Montepulciano or Primitivo, to create unique and distinct wines.
With its deep-rooted history and exceptional oenological qualities, Nero di Troia has gained increasing recognition on the international wine scene. Wine enthusiasts seeking an authentic taste of Apulia’s winemaking heritage should not miss the opportunity to experience the intriguing nuances of this captivating grape variety.
Tasting Notes
Cantina Diomede’s ‘Canace’ Nero di Troia is a full-bodied red wine showing vitality and complexity and finesse. Deep red in colour with notes of violet, it features warm spices, cocoa, coffee, liquorice, and ripe berry fruit. Rich on the palate with plummy, leathery flavours, macerated black cherries, the lingering spice and tannins are balanced with fresh acidity. All this makes it ideal for pairing with red meats, aged cheeses, and game.
Or…according to the producer “Excellent as a meditation wine” (if that is such a thing?).
A serious star of a wine – we absolutely love it!
Food Pairing
Best served with red meat, game dishes, lamb and aged cheeses.
